We Love… Ibiza Spotlight – Guest Blog

Words by Lydia Laws - Ibiza Spotlight

Team Spotlight at We Love...

I’m honoured to have been asked to write a guest blog, rounding up We Love…’s season through the eyes of Spotlight.

As a complete Ibiza Virgin who ultimately just threw myself in at the deep end, working for Ibiza Spotlight writing about music and Ibiza for the season (I know, what a chore right?), I’ve discovered that everything on the island is like waves in the Ibiza sea; you catch a great swell and it carries you through on the surface, then you face a storm from time to time. It always seemed to me however, that even in this ‘Year of Change’ and tumultuous clubbing terrain; this party and its reputation have seen nothing but smooth sailing. I found myself very much settling into a new Sunday night tradition, forgoing the Sunday roast for a substantially more filling and delicious experience (plus no washing up, always a win) of a constantly evolving diverse and eclectic array of acts including James Zabiela, Joris Voorn, Deetron, Bicep, Ian Blevins, Paul Woolford, and of course the huge Underworld (live) and Disclosure (live) to name but a few.

With 5 arenas in Space and around 25 artists and acts you find yourself spoilt for choice, but thanks to the We Love… team’s careful cultivation of set times you can confidently skip to and fro from each room and soak up as much music as physically possible.

Dixon smashing the terrace at the Innervisions Showcase

Time to be a little more specific. There are two We Love… nights that were so huge to me, they’ll probably stay up there in my Top 10 Nights in History (I’m partial to ‘Top Tens’, just go with it). They are the Innervisions Takeover on the Terrace, and the We Love… Closing. Pretty much every DJ I have interviewed for Spotlight has raved about Space’s Terrace being one of the best venues to play, and when one witnesses nights like the Innervisions takeover I can completely see why. The space is intimate, the tunes are huge and the crowd is made up of like-minded people who know their stuff. I love catching the eye of another raver also grinning profusely when one of my favourite tracks is dropped. Innervisions’ Dixon’s set on the Terrace was mind-blowing, and I can happily admit to having one of those moments of Dancefloor Clarity- I’m in Ibiza, surrounded by the cream of the island crop and I’m supporting a long-running forward-thinking night run by a fantastic team brimming with musical integrity. Life can’t really get much better can it? And with regards to the closing party, my night consisted of techno, disco, funk, soul, magic card tricks, dancing with Craig Charles and the We Love… team. Enough said!

Aslan. No Sorry! James Zabiela

And the main reason we love, er, We Love…? I think I can speak for all of Team Spotlight when I say that they were one of the first parties to take risks and have such a huge range of musical styles and names under one roof. They’ve also continued to care so much about the musical quality of their nights, supporting fresh and new up-and-comers and also asking back the artists who have constantly impressed this season, such as Zabiela. This British artist and producer is a real jewel in the We Love… crown (also winning my vote for Best DJ Hair, just check out those blond locks…) brings brilliant creativity and energy to the Discoteca every time he plays.

So the season has now finished, and has flown over faster than I thought even possible. From all of us at Spotlight, thanks We Love… for being such an integral part of a successful unforgettable summer!

We Love… Closing Party 2013

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

15 years after inception, We Love… has pretty much seen it all and bought the (smiley face) T-Shirt. Over this decade and a half, we are still doing what we do and know best – music.

This summer has seen over 150 artists perform over the 6 arenas of We Love… at Space. Veteran players such as Fatboy Slim, Derrick May, Carl Craig and Octave One, loyal and talented residents such as Paul Woolford, James Zabiela, PBR Streetgang and Groove Armada, the new sounds of Blawan, Machinedrum, Dusky, Dense & Pika, Pedestrian, Boddika and Jimmy Edgar, back to back sessions with Joy Orbison Vs Ben UFO, Midland Vs Paul Woolford and Heidi Vs Scuba, plus hard hitting live acts nowhere else to be found on the island such as the mighty Underworld Live, Simian Mobile Disco’s live analogue set, Innervisions Showcase with Dixon, Âme and Henrik Schwarz, not forgetting the incredible show that was Disclosure Live back in June – too many to even mention!

You can listen to James Zabiela live in the Discoteca right here

For our royal Closing Party on the 29th September, 35 artists graced the hallowed depths of Space at a night that will go down in history as one of the best we have ever seen. Techno frontiers in the Discoteca with Blawan, Machinedrum live, James Zabiela, Agoria and Simian Mobile Disco. Over on the terrace, the crowd danced wildly to the sounds of Bicep, Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim and 2manydjs. To close the year in style, PBR Streetgang kept the spirit alive way past sunrise with enthusiastic clubbers refusing to leave the dancefloor.

Big thanks must also go to our steadfast residents who have stayed true and warmed up the dancefloors over the years.

But the biggest thanks goes out to you – we can book the best DJs in the world and provide all the pyrotechnics, ice cannons and glitter you could possibly want, but without you, the clubbers who come for the music and to dance all night year after year after year, we are nothing. Gracias a todos. We Love… You!

We Love… Innervisions

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

Last year at We Love… we invited a band of brothers from German electronic label Innervisions to play a monthly residency at the club after blowing our socks off with a one-off takeover back in 2011. This year, we are proud to invite the Innervisions crew back to the Terrace this Sunday where they have made nothing short of a lasting impression time and time again.

As we trust the boys implicitly, we have given them free rein of the 5 hours they get to play. This means that Henrik Schwarz (Live), Dixon, Âme (Live) and Marcus Worgull are at liberty to use this time as they see fit.

Expect live performances, back to back sessions, stunning light shows and general conviviality.

We Love… September – Part 2

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013

15th September

Roll up! Roll up! It’s a full house of 15s. Week 15 on the 15th September sees us host Chew The Fat’s 15th birthday party. Spread across two rooms, the Discoteca and the Sunset Terrace, the Fat lads are bringing an exclusive performance of Paul Woolford’s Special Request DJ set. You can read all about it and his relationship with We Love… here. Wooly has been playing for us since 2005 and is hot property at the moment with his Untitled record being one of the biggest island hits of this summer.

You can hear his Special Request techo/house hybrid work on his Soundcloud here

On the Sunset Terrace, Duke Dumont is our very special guest riding high on the back of his number one single Need U (100%). Get there early as he is on at 10! He is joined by the seriously hot artists du jour Kiwi and Leon Vynehall making this smaller room one of the most forward thinking of the night.

Over on the terrace, the Just Jack crew, Dan Wild and Tom Rio from Bristol, host the room with a once only We Love… show for house big guns Steve Bug and Kevin Saunderson. They have assured us that they are bringing along a big posse so the atmosphere is guaranteed to be that of one big fat fiesta. To top all of that, we have a one off back to back performance by Heidi and Scuba which should be a real treat, as their form of house is like a marriage made on the dancefloor.

Up on the roof, we have a live performance by Drew Hill. The collaborative moniker of Michelle Drew and Phillipp Hill, their music is ambient, deep and hypnotic. The Premier Etage is the perfect spot for them to showcase their talents. We are proud as punch to welcome them to We Love…

You can grab a free download of the ethereal ‘Pouring Rain’ by Drew Hill here plus check out some of their other music including the magnificent work with Maribou State here.

22nd September

One word – INNERVISIONS! We invite our buddies Âme, Dixon, Henrik Schwarz and Marcus Worgull back to the terrace for this one-off label show and we have given them free rein to programme their sets as they see fit, so expect live performances, back to back sessions and general camaraderie as the night takes on an organic flow.

Around the club, Moda Black’s Jaymo & Andy George play with Doorly on the Sunset Terrace early doors. These three have some serious chemistry so get there early to witness it first hand as they are on before 12.

After Dark, DJ Yoda is back after last year’s astounding show with his full LED screen backdrop of sensory boggling visuals. A real show stopper.

Over in the comfortable corner of El Salon, We Love’s own Leena Sharma has invited her vinyl only record label Eclectic Avenue Records (E.A.R) to host the room. Representing is Ryan Shaw who is bound to be bringing his inimitable party pants and his perfect El Salon style soundtrack. Special guests for this special evening’s event are Leeds pals PBR Streetgang, one of whom (Bonar Bradberry) will have just got married that week, so we are celebrating their unofficial wedding reception at We Love… that Sunday. Expect high jinks, rowdiness, glitter cannons and cheese hedgehogs.

We Love… Agoria

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

I spy with my fly eye

This Sunday 19 August, Sébastien Devaud aka Agoria joins his Innervision pals Dixon and Âme to take over the terrace for the third episode of their four part Innervisions Showcase residency.

Belonging to the long-line of artists emerging from the French electronic scene, Agoria approached Dixon last year to remix ‘Libellules’ – a track from his gossamer-coated and highly-acclaimed Impermanence album. Dixon considered this track perfection already but upon hearing another record Agoria was working on at the time ‘Singing’, he was especially fascinated by the unmistakable breathy vocals of Scalde and asked if he could not only remix it, but sign it to the Innervisions label.

Agoria’s influences of jazz and Detroit techno are more than plausible in this exclusive recording of his Treehouse gig in Miami back in June and is getting the team at We Love HQ fully equipped for another standout night at our most treasured Space. Here it is for you to enjoy.

Agoria will be back in the Discoteca for his final show of the year on Sunday 16 September 2012.

Friends & Family – Innervisions

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Last summer one of the undoubted highlights of our season was when the Innervisions crew came on board. Their inimitable brand of soul drenched house and techno had been a fixture in the DJ sets of not only our guests, but also the full gamut of weekly residents making the We Love dancefloor mechanism purr so effectively over the last few years. The label has been nothing short of sensational, with everything from breakout Ibiza classic ‘Rej’ by duo Ame to the softer yet no less effective remix Henrik Schwarz offered for the duet between British soul firebrand Omar and Motown legend Stevie Wonder ‘Feeling You’.

Both Henrik and Ame joined us last year for a hook-up with Resident Advisor, alongside the third piece of the Innervisions jigsaw Dixon, for an event that was heralded as one of the White Isle’s best in terms of musical output in 2011. We loved it so much that we inked them in for a monthly residency and they will be playing four dates across the summer, starting off with the Opening Fiesta on June 10th where all three lynchpins of the label joined by deep disco don Tensnake playing live and Burlington Project lothario Ryan O’Gorman. So what better way to welcome them into the fold than a Friends and Family blog post detailing their recent activity?

Of course since that wondrous evening in late July and indeed the end of the season, all three of the Innervisions players have had something of a glorious run of form which shows no signs of relenting. Dixon, whose strung out masterpiece remix of Osunlade’s ‘Envision’ was arguably the Balearic anthem of last summer, has been working hard in the studio on a number of projects which includes a remix of ‘Singing’, produced by another of our freshest incumbents of the Friends and Family status Agoria. It follows his famous declaration that his compilation for Frankfurt’s legendary Robert Johnson which arrived last Autumn would be his final ever.

Which brings neatly onto his club activity; the aforementioned Robert Johnson has a European tour (and a book entitled ‘Come on in my Kitchen’) around their thirteenth anniversary which will feature Dixon, Leeds hedonistic paradise Mono_Cult turn five with him headlining alongside Kyle Hall and WLS 2012 Fresh Blood Starlet Julio Bashmore, whilst house music pioneers Sub Club in Glasgow celebrate their twenty fifth anniversary with five weeks of activity which features Dixon as the star attraction. Even the stuff that’s already happened is worth salivating over; his live set from the Bolier Room Berlin sessions (below) is emblematic of his musical ingenuity and on 17th of March a special Innervisions showcase at Berghain and PanoramaBar saw the usual extended set through the avenues of house complimented by a back to back performance with Ame focusing solely on techno.

Ame have been equally as industrious in their output. The aforementioned ‘Rej’ might have been their breakout record but their sound has since developed, matured and mutated considerably in the seven years since its inception, with the duo now behind a very special live set which will be a feature of the We Love residency over the season. Innervisions will be releasing a recording of the duo’s live show in the upcoming future, a sneak preview of which can be heard here, featuring their own productions and remixes (including their take on Osunlade) of the likes of Underworld, Roy Ayers, Unkle and Rodamaal, plus an unreleased edit of Kompakt’s melodic techno guru Gui Boratto.

The final focus falls on Henrik Schwarz, an artist that continues to impress with his cut up orchestrations that blur the boundaries between live improvisation and djing, best boldly showcased with the way he shattered preconceptions of what Laptop DJing/performance could represent with his DJ Kicks album. He’s shown his musical nous recently with the recording of his latest album ‘Instruments’, which was electronically composed and played by a classical chamber orchestra and then recorded unplugged in a church in Kreuzberg (Berlin), due for release in the Autumn. Those chomping at the bit to get the opus will be pleased to hear that the first piece of those live sets will soon be available on 12″ vinyl and download.

Also set for a release relatively soon is a remix of Ane Brun and Jose Gonzales‘ ‘Worship’, whilst his long term collaboration with Bugge Wesseltoft finally sees a live album also inked in for the summer. You can see the pair improvising live together as part of the Red Bull Music Academy below, and remind yourself of their sumptuous Knights of the Jaguar homage ‘Leave my Head alone Brain’ by clicking here.

Innervisions play We Love on the following dates:

10th June – Henrik Schwarz, Dixon, Ame dj set, Tensnake live, Ryan O Gorman
15th July – Dixon, Ame live, Steve Bug, Aquarius Heaven, Ryan O Gorman
19th August – Dixon, Agoria, Ame dj set, DOP live, Ryan O Gorman
16th September – Henrik Schwarz, Dixon, Ame live, Tod Terje, Ryan O Gorman

We Love Space 2012 Opening Party – June 10th

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Ibiza is warming and that summer buzz beginning to bubble. The covers are starting to come off what’s planned for the best summer in We Love Space’s illustrious history. There’s plenty more (all 17 Sundays) to be revealed in due course, but let’s start off as we intend to continue – the date for your diary is our opening fiesta on June 10th 2012. We’re welcoming new aural delights alongside some stalwart residents who’ve become regular fixtures by virtue of their commitment to bringing new sounds to We Love’s spiritual home of Space, Ibiza. There’s 5 rooms, a 7pm start, a discerning drove of clued-up clubbers and a finish of some time past dawn… room by room and full lineup below.

Innervisions Showcase feat: Henrik Schwarz, Dixon, Ame (DJ set), Tensnake (live) & Ryan O Gorman
There were high expectations of the Innervisions crew when we invited them to take over the hallowed Space Terrace last summer. Henrik, Dixon and Ame brought something truly special to the table that night, with everyone from the sound and light technicians to our esteemed residents declaring it one of the finest nights of the summer. With all three acts jumping on the decks at will, they bring a carefree party take on the seriously good Innervisions catalogue and beyond. Joining Innversions will be nu-disco’s most affable chap, Tensnake. His beautifully packaged, Vinyl Factory released ‘Live + Mix’ is a sight and sound to behold. Proceedings will be kicked off by Ryan O’Gorman bringing his years (decades yet?) of Ibiza experience to the first few hours of this years opening party. He will undoubtedly however, be there until the end.

Can envision it

69 (Carl Craig) live, Derrick May, Paul Woolford vs. Ben UFO, Jem Haynes
An old friend reviving an early project makes for a new experience in the Discoteca! We are of course talking about seasoned campaigner Carl Craig and his 69 live alias. He’ll be channelling utopian zeal through the renowned (and upgraded) Funktion 1 system. Expect everything from thundering breakbeats to more cosmically inclined funk flickers. He’ll be joined by fellow D-Town local Derrick May who played the consummate host showing us around his home city at the end of last year. The Innovator has left many a fellow DJ with mouths agape at his seamless mixing without the use of headphones. Long-serving resident Paul Woolford is combining with Rinse FM man Ben UFO for a head to head session which promises to bridge that thin but engaging gap between techno and UK-bass. Get an idea of where they’ll take you with a listen to Ben UFOs podcast for Mary Anne Hobbs below. Second Line main man Jem Haynes will be opening the room with his trademark house sound, which every now and then unveils his precision drum’n'bass roots.

Spirit of '69

Sunset Terrace:
Jaymo & Andy George, Jason Bye
“After Dark” feat. Mr Doris & The Nextmen
Jaymo & Andy George were something of a revelation last year on the Sunset Terrace. Although they started as an unknown quantity, they quickly found their balearic feet and were soon charming crowds with their own brand of body-moving house and disco. They’ll be joined by a man who’s genuinely been there from the start of the current Ibiza scene, although unlike most he’s still serving up the goods each and every week. If his name’s not down he’s not coming in, Jason Bye. Once the witching hour has passed things are going to pitch down and get a bit more intimate with Ibiza’s Hardest Working DJ™ Mr Doris and his After Dark project. Making their We Love debut The Nextmen perform an Ibizan exclusive for our opening fiesta.

A fine lark, After Dark

El Salon:
The Love Lounge feat. Luca C & Brigante, Kelly Love
Kelly Love has been presenting El Salon since its inception as the newest room in Space. She’s stamped her mark as hostess-with-the-mostest and this is the first of her 4 parties this summer. Local lad and friend of the family Brigante will be joined by his partner in crime Luca C. Channeling everything from Mancuso to Baldelli, it’s a cosmic disco party.

Chic and unique

Premier Etage:
The Garden Get Together featuring Alfredo, Christophe & El Harvo and Ian Blevins
Originator and maestro Alfredo returns to the club’s rooftop area Premier Etage, where the cooler air blends with the balearic beat. Cape wearing, glitter loving, future-boogieing El Harvo is bringing friend Cristophe and their Garden Party boat-party ethos all the way from the Adriatic. Rounding up the lineup is the soft-haired Ian Blevins.

Adriatic vs. Balearic

There’s plenty more of our summer lineups to be announced shortly, our twitter and facebook pages are probably the best place to keep up to date. We’ve a lot of exciting news coming up over the next few days so keep ‘em peeled…

Here’s the Opening Party lineup in full: 69 (Carl Craig) live, Derrick May, Henrik Schwarz, Dixon, Ame, Tensnake (live), Jaymo & Andy George, Paul Woolford v’s Ben UFO, Luca C & Brigante, Alfredo, Mr Doris presents “After Dark”, El Harvo & Cristophe, Ryan O Gorman, Jason Bye, Jem Haynes, Ian Blevins, Ian C
